Grupo Agrotecnologia, Miguel Hernández University and Orihuela Town Council have signed an agreement to preserve and clone the fig tree at the House Museum of Miguel Hernández. Orihuela, the home town of the poet, is committed to promoting and disseminating the cultural heritage represented by his work.
Grupo Agrotecnologia, the national leader in biostimulants and biopesticides, Orihuela Town Council and Miguel Hernández University have signed an agreement to protect, care and preserve the hundred-year-old fig tree and symbol of the work of Miguel Hernández, the famous poet and playwright from Orihuela.
Miguel Hernández, thanks to his contact with and knowledge of nature, knew how to convey his passion for his town; using simple language, full of rural vocabulary and symbols. For him, the fig tree was a figure of natural inspiration, besides being a resting place and providing shade. His favourite fruit were figs. He had a fig tree at home – today the House Museum of Miguel Hernández- which will be protected and cared for thanks to the signing of this agreement. There are many references to fig trees in his work, Huerto mío, Oda a la higuera, Como la higuera jóven, etc. The most well-known is Elegía, which are verses full of friendship and pain and anguish caused by the death of his friend and writer, Ramón Sijé.

Thanks to this agreement, the fig tree in his garden will be preserved and cloned. The cloned seedling will be sent to a range of institutions, bodies and organisations. The first cloned cuttings will be dedicated to King Felipe, because the day of the signing of this agreement coincided with the celebration of his 50th birthday.
